Letter: NLI 577.3/7
Letter NLI 577.3/7Description
Letter from Thābit(?) b. Ibrāhīm, in Fustat, to Abū Isḥāq Ibāhīm al-Kohen b. Yūsuf, in Alexandria. Dating: 11th or 12th century. Written in Judaeo-Arabic with the address in Arabic script. Deals with business matters. The sender asks if the addressee has forwarded his letter to Abū Yaʿqūb Ibn Lukhtūsh (a Berber name which appears in several of the India Book IV documents). He has enclosed another letter for his brother ʿAbbās. If any of 'our colleagues' (aṣḥābunā) are planning a business trip, the addressee should send them to the sender's house. The sender is very anxious to hear confirmation that the addressee has carried out his business, so the addressee should send word with anybody, Jew or Muslim, who is coming up to Fustat. Pure olive oil (al-zayt al-ṭayyib... al-ṣāfī) is currently "32 for a dinar" in Fustat. The sender also wishes to know if the addressee has forwarded his letter to his father. His son Abū Saʿīd sends greetings. In a postscript he asks for fresh Byzantine cheese if available in Alexandria.
