Description

Court record concerning a prozbol. Dated on both sides of the bifolio, with the fully preserved date on the right: Sunday 28 Elul 1852 Seleucid (1511 CE). The record mentions a variety of individuals, some with rabbinic honorifics: Shemuʾel ha-dayyan (or possibly surname ha-Dayyan), R. Shemuʾel Najares, Nissim Bibas, Yaʿaqov Mar-Ḥayyīm/Marḥayyīm, Yiṣḥaq Ben-Yehuda, among others. The prozbol is a legal mechanism that technically changed the status of individual private loans into the public administration, allowing the poor to receive interest-free loans before the Sabbatical year while protecting the investments of the lenders. Requires further examination.
