Description
Two fragments of a legal document in the hand of Yosef b. Shemuʾel b. Saʿadya ha-Levi. Location: Fustat. Dating: 1188–93 CE based on the Seleucid date of 15[..] combined with the hijrī date of 58[.]. This is consistent with the name of the Gaʾon Sar Shalom ha-Levi appearing in a jotting on verso. The document is a partnership agreement for a business in a drug warehouse (makhzan ʿiṭr) for a period of two years. The upper piece mentions the name Tamīm and a sum of 75 (dirhams? dinars?). There is a clause about "the profit that remains after subtracting fees and rents." The lower fragment mentions Abū Saʿīd and Riḍā (or Abū l-Riḍā). On verso there are the remnants of a halakhic treatise or responsum in the same hand, in addition to jottings in a much larger hand and the mention of "our teacher and rabbi Sar Shalom ha-Levi [...] al-Jālūt" written in a third hand. Join: Alan Elbaum. (Information from Amir Ashur and Alan Elbaum.)
