Description
Business letter in Arabic script containing an order for lac and pepper. Mentions Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Naṣr al-Ṣārifī, Masʿūd, and ʿAbd al-Karīm. Also requests that the addressee collect a payment from the nākhudā Abū ʿAbdallāh (probably Abū ʿAbdallāh b. Abū l-Ḥasan Ibn al-Katāʾib, discussed in Goitein and Friedman, India Traders, 149). The sender is Abū l-Khayr b. al-Ḥasan al-Isrāʾīlī, possibly in Yemen, and the addressee is probably Avraham ben Yiju (ابراهيم بن سرور بن ايشوا), possibly in India. Aodeh's reading of the address (Natan b. Nahray to Nahray b. Nissim) seems incorrect. Additionally, the reference to a nākhudā places this in an Indian Ocean rather than Mediterranean context. The sender, who refers to himself as "your son," may be Avraham's cousin (the son of his maternal aunt) Abū l-Khayr Ibn al-Minqār (see Goitein and Friedman, India Traders, 69). ASE
