Letter T-S NS 290.82 + T-S NS 290.79

Description

Letter with legal content, possibly from a judge to a higher authority. The sender may be Yosef or [...] b. Yosef. The document is headed by the glyph. He begins "I report that there came before [us] . . . the judges of the Jews . . . ." The text is quite damaged and fragmented. Reports on a dispute between two men, one of whom says 'I have no son and no brother... in these lands....' A governmental decree is mentioned (tawqīʿ karīm). One of the parties is referred to as al-Rayyis, and another is al-Sharīf. Somebody travels, and somebody has a male child, and somebody dies. In l. 10 a woman is introduced (al-mamlūka). She seems to be demanding her ketubba payment (kitābhā wa-ḥaqqhā). But the Rayyis would not pay her this money until the governmental decree was issued (presumably in response to the woman petitioning for aid outside the Jewish legal system). It is possible that the woman is being brought before the Jewish court (תחמל עלי אלשרע, though would expect אלי). Needs further examination. Join: Alan Elbaum
