Description

Bill of rent for Shemuel Maṭāwīṭ. Dated: Sivan 53[..] AM = 1540–1639 CE. Location: possibly Cairo, the portion of the word that is visible before the final clause could be "מצ]רים]". The only visible signature below the document might end with "ממלטה", where Jews had been expelled in the summer of 1492 CE (5252 AM). Besides the timing of the signature, post-1540, the reading of the location is also uncertain because the final letter closely resembles vav (but could be a cursive ה). The alternative reading, ממלטו, however seems less likely as a potential surname. MCD.
