Description

Petition from Abū l-Ḥasan b. Dāwūd to a Fatimid dignitary. The petitioner is a poor young man, whose father died destitute and left him only some pieces of furniture, which Abū l-Ḥasan would now like to sell. Dating: ca. 12th century. On verso there is a Judaeo-Arabic text on Jewish law divided into numbered paragraphs, regarding marriage contracts and mentioning Rabbi Shimʿon and the Mishna. (Information from CUDL)

  1.                      عبدها ومملوكها
  2.                       ابو الحسن بن داوود
  3. بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم
  4. مملوك الحضرة السامية الاجلية النفسية الراسية ثبت الله
  5. مجدها ووطد سعدها واهلك شانيها وضدها يقبل
  6. [الارض بين] اقدامها     وينهي الى جلالها انه صبي فقيـ[ـر]
  7. [             ] المبارك بنظرها السعيد وكان والد المـ[ـملوك]
  8. [             ] ذات يده وافتقره وتصعلك فالجاه ضـ[ـيق]
  9. الحال [الى ا]لخروج من القاهرة لطلب الرزق والتماسه وخـ[ـلى (؟)]
  10. عن المملوك حال والده وعدمه ولم يسمع له خبر الى الا[ـن]
  11. وخلف اثاث يسير وذكرت زوجه والد المملوك [

  1. His servant and slave,

  2. Abū al-Ḥasan ibn Dāʾūd

  3. In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.

  4. The slave of the lofty, mighty, much-sought-after presence, the leader, may God establish

  5. his glory, consolidate his good fortune and destroy his hater and his opponent, kisses

  6. [the ground before] his feet and reports to his magnificence that he is a poor young man

  7. [ ]the blessed [ ] under his auspicious supervision. The father of the slave

  8. [ ] his possessions and became poor and destitute. Poverty caused him to take refuge

  9. outside of Cairo to seek sustenance.

  10. The slave was unaware of the situation of his father and his destitution and heard no news of him until now.

  11. He left a few items of furniture and the wife of the slave's father said [ ]

  12. [ ] the slave its truth and what he left
