Description

Ketubba, Aleppo, 1026–28 CE. The document omits the divorce clause, and the groom notably refers to himself and his bride as the "Jew" and the "Jewess." On the date: the date given is 958 from the destruction of the Temple, which was calculated as having happened in 68, 69, or 70 CE depending on the method. Since the day of the week is not preserved, it is unclear which method was used and whether the year was 1026, 1027, or 1028 CE (Friedman, Jewish Marriage, vol. 2, 88-95) EMS/MR

  2. [On the ... day] of the week, in the month of Adar, fourteen days therein, of the year 958 of the era of the Temple, may it be (God's) will that it be rebuilt in [our] days, [in the city of Aleppo]
  3. [which is] situated on the river Qoueiq. "I, Ṣedaqa ha-Levi b. Yeshuʿa, the Jew, the groom—I request you, thou Ḥusn daughter of Wahb, the Jewess [...]
  4. [... to] be my wife. And I will give you your mohar and ketubba, valued in money as 200 silver zuz, as Moses instructed to give to the virgins, the daughters of Isra[el ...]
  5. [any v]ow, adjuration, oath, and bond, which are (will be) upon you." [And] this bride consented to be married to this, her husband, and to serve him in piety and clean[ness ...]
