Description

Legal query addressed to the Gaʾon (probably Maṣliaḥ) in the hand of Ḥalfon b. Menashshe ha-Levi (fl. 1100–1138 CE). Concerning a man who remarried after the death of his first wife. The first wife's jewelry, valued at nearly 50 dinars, stayed with him, and he was her heir according to halakha. Now that he has died, there is a dispute between the first wife's family and the living widow. The first wife's mother wanted it to be passed on to her granddaughter. The widow wanted it to go toward payment of her ketubba debt. Unless there were special stipulations, the widow would have a good claim. (Information in part from M. A. Friedman and Amir Ashur.) Joins: Alan Elbaum and Oded Zinger.
