Description
Petition from Abū l-Ḥasan b. Dāwūd to a Fatimid dignitary. The petitioner is a poor young man, whose father died destitute and left him only some pieces of furniture, which Abū l-Ḥasan would now like to sell. Dating: ca. 12th century. On verso there is a Judaeo-Arabic text on Jewish law divided into numbered paragraphs, regarding marriage contracts and mentioning Rabbi Shimʿon and the Mishna. (Information from CUDL)

- الدفاع عن حوابيه وزاد في حراسة مجده وعلايه وامتع
- امير المومنين بدوام عزه واطالة بقايه وينهي انه رجل
- صعلوك غريب الدار من اهل ثغر الاسكندرية حرسها الله تعالى
- وكان قد استجار حانوت بها في دار لنصرانى واوفى اجرتها
- الي اخر المدة التي في الاجرة واوفي ما عليه من جميع الاجرة
- ولم يبقى عليه شيا والمملوك قد قصد باب الله سبحانه ويس{ل}
- المولا بحمله على تقضى الشرع والعدل والانصاغ وان
- يخلي عن المملوك ليجد السبيل الى قيامته علي عايلته واطفاله وجمع
- شمله بهم انعاما عليه واحسانا اليه { }.... ان شا الله تعالى
- والحمد لله وحده وصلواته على سيدنا محمد نبينا وسلم تسليما

In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.

The slave of the lofty, mighty, much-sought-after presence, the leader, may God establish
-
his glory, consolidate his good fortune and destroy his hater and his opponent, kisses
-
[the ground before] his feet and reports to his magnificence that he is a poor young man
-
[ ]the blessed [ ] under his auspicious supervision. The father of the slave
-
[ ] his possessions and became poor and destitute. Poverty caused him to take refuge
-
outside of Cairo to seek sustenance.

The slave was unaware of the situation of his father and his destitution and heard no news of him until now.

He left a few items of furniture and the wife of the slave's father said [ ]
