ʿUmar b. Yūsuf

Description / Bio

Mail carrier transporting letters from Jerusalem to Fustat in the second half of the eleventh century. He transported several letters to Nahray b. Nissim (fl. 1050-96) alongside his father, al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, a fellow mail carrier. The family was likely Muslim (or perhaps Christian): their names were always written out in Arabic while the letters they carried were in Hebrew script.
