Description / Bio

Shipowner active in 1140/41. His name is usually written אלדיבגי but in one document is written אלדיבאגי, suggesting that it is best understood as al-Dīb{ā}jī ("the brocade dealer"). Also possible is al-Dībjī ("the Maldivian"), as argued by Nazim Sattar in the May 2023 Fragment of the Month (https://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/collections/departments/taylor-schechter-genizah-research-unit/fragment-month/fotm-2023/fragment-3
