Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

The laws of unlimited investment partnership (mufāwaḍa) permit a loan to be granted with both partners' permission, and the even split of partnership profits or losses is also reminiscent of the mufāwaḍa agreement. However, while the qinyan provisions here are mutual, the provisions concerning the work itself suggest that one of the partners is significantly senior.

(There is a tricky phrase at the beginning of this section: this representative appears to be called בליל, which could be Bulayl and a diminutive of Bilāl; it is faintly possible that בליל חמס refers to "the one sodden with discord/oppression"; it is also possible that there is a pun or code for בעל המס, tax collector, and the querier did not wish to put that phrase in the document.)

However, the "V" (1000) symbol commonly found in early modern fragments also seems possible (1076 AH). The fragment is filled with text of various kinds, such as a formulary for opening accounts on the recto: "קאימה מבארכה אן שא אללה תעאלי" (May this list [of accts.] be blessed by God Exalted).

Luria spent much of his life in Cairo and was living at the time these accounts were recorded– his other honorific is נר׳׳ו –so the dating falls somewhere within this timespan. The paleography also supports 16th-century dating. Some of the other names no the recto include: Yaʿacov Sevīlī/Shevīlī, Yiṣḥaq Sūsī Shemuʾel Ḥevronī Yosef b.
