  2. [I will] send it with whomever you come to an agreement with and I will give him

  3. the price of fodder for two nights. I told him 

  4. it wasn’t possible for you to send 

  5. today what you had refused—

  6. to send saddles and reins—out of your fear

  7. that you will be displeased. I rented 

  8. a donkey from Qalyūb to Shatanuf toward the place of

  9. the //auspicious// barges. We sped and stayed

  10.  several days [on the barge] and on the Nile we endured

  11.  various hardships. When we reached

  12.  Manūf, the ruler (al-Malik al-Afḍal) //may God perpetuate his reign// embarked on the barge, and 

  13. my lord embarked with him, as well as my lord the elder

  14. Abū l-Mufaḍḍal, and we proceeded toward al-Maḥalla. I stayed 

  15.  on the barge and stayed ….

  16.  the guide. I did not find anyone

  17.  with whom to send a letter. This

  18. is the reason I have ceased sending you my letters. When

  19.  my lord returned from al-Maḥalla,

  20.  I wrote a letter and sent it with 

  21.  Salāma al-Shirjī, but it was brief,

  22.  and I wasn’t able to 

  23.  inform him because time was short. With regard

  24.  to textiles that I had

  25. to get to al-Maḥalla,

  26.  I haven’t done so, but 

  27. have included them along with other textiles.

  28. I have acquainted myself with everything

  29. in your letter and have taken cognizance of it. Another letter

  30.  from you also reached us, and I understood

  31.  ... a shāshiyya and a lining with

  32.  the elder Abū Sulaymān Dāwūd and what 

  33. you had asked to safeguard …. 

  34. It is safeguarded in a trunk.

  35. As for my lord the elder Abū l-Mufaḍḍal,

  36. may God grant him a long life, I am grateful for his immense benevolence

  37. may God the exalted reward him bountifully and not

  38. deprive me of his benefactions and perpetuate

  39. his diligence for my requests

  40. and all my matters. My regards to you

  41. and to whoever expands your eminence.

  42. My regards to your wife.

  43. Inform her of my immense longing towards her.

  44. Kiss on my behalf the hand of my master the Rayyis….

  1. We entered Alexandria on [   ]day

  2. My lord wrote explaining

  3. everything and my lord loaned Abū l-Mufaḍḍal

  4. a mule and gave me his donkey. We are aware of

  5. what happened to the Frankish female slave. I have already told you

  6. what is required. I know you have entrusted

  7. Urjuwān (purple cloth) to Abū l-Afrāḥ (ʿArus b. Yosef)

  8. and also garments. Everything about which you have instructed me

  9. I will enact and inform you about ….

  10. my matters and regards. 

  11. I wish to inform you of what happened to the wife of the elder

  12. Abū Saʿīd. Praise be to God for what happened

  13. regarding the death of the female child. It was inevitable, may God in return grant

  14. a male child soon. We congratulate them 

  15. for her delivery and congratulate them on my behalf 

  16. for her delivery and regards.
