This is a memorandum from yourclose associate Nahray ben Nissim: A letter arrived from the amir saying: ‘Send someone to pick up the bags of gold coins which have arrived.’ The situation obliged me to leave immediately for Alexandria. As a result, I did not have the opportunity to meet with you. I regret this, and pray that God, in His mercy, will see our affairs to a favorable conclusion. I still owe 44 dinars on a cheque (suftaja) from Busir. The same person to whom thisis owed also has a cheque (suftaja) from me, one that I previously wrote in Busir when I was in need of funds. At that time, I wrote to you requesting that you redeem the cheque. Please make very sure, my lord, to take from him both of these documents containing my obligation and to pay him the 44 gold dinars. I have made provisions to cover this sum as follows.

In order to cover the outstanding cheque (suftaja) there still remains one dinar and one-sixth of a dinar and one-half of a 1/72nd of a dinar. You can get this sum from my brother-in-law Abū ʿAlī. Similarly, my lord, you should know that I loaded 16 bales of flax on to the Nile boat (ʿushārī) belonging to a man named Ghanāʾim. These included six bales in the names of Jacob and Isaac, the two sons of Khalaf, and ten bales in my own name. I have paid all the dues and taxes on these bales at the Dār Mānak (= the Exchange of Manak). I still owe (for these bales) the tolls that will have to be paid at the toll stations of Mukhtara and Rosetta. Would you, my lord, please get the amount necessary to cover these expenses from my brother-in-law. Also, make sure to take with you the various documents/receipts necessary (for the procedures) at the port of Rosetta. Similarly, there is an order payment which I owe to the Flax Exchange.

Send all of these documents with Ghanāʾim (the owner of the ship carrying the bales to Rosetta), or send them with ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq, the son of the Porter who is traveling on the ship down to Rosetta. Likewise, you should pay the sailors a small gratuity ranging from three quarters of a dirham to a full dirham per bale of flax. ... If I receive any more bales of flax from Būṣīr, please take delivery of them and get the money to cover their taxes and expenses from Abū ʿAlī, my brother-in-law — God never deprive me of his presence. Also, pay two dirhams to the boat owner, Ghanāʾim. These are to be given to the portmaster at Rosetta for the 16 bales of flax we are shipping. If he should ask for an additional half gold dinar in order to buy straw mats to be used to protect the bales from the rain, please pay this to him and addit on to our account as expenses for transport.
