India Book II,15. Letter from Maḍmūn ibn Ḥasan, in Aden, to Avraham Ibn Yijū, in Mangalore on the Malabar coast of India. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: 1130s CE. Join: Alan Elbaum. There is another copy of the letter preserved: PGPID 5438 (India Book II,13 and II, 14). There is a reference in this letter to a place called אלדייב (al-Diyyab), for which Maḍmūn wants a ship to set out from Mangalore to pick up coir, aloeswood, mango (?), and coconuts. Goitein and Friedman suggest this is the Maldives, but Lambourn ("Twelfth-century Malabar through Geniza sources," in Sur les Chemins d'Onagre, 2018) says the Laccadives would be a more logical itinerary en route to Aden. The word derives from dvīpa in Sanskrit or Malayalam, meaning "islands," so the reference in the letter is vague enough to support multiple interpretations.

Kinābtī, and Isḥāq the Bānyān my best

regards, and let them know of my longing for them.

Inform them on my behalf that, as for pepper

this coming year, its value—

the price per bahār—will be thirty dīnārs
-
and more than this. As for refurbished iron,
-
a bahār will be (worth) at least twenty dīn(ārs),
-
and the shiny iron that had been in the city
-
is entirely sold out. If they can, they should send
-
a ship from Mangalore and fill it with
-
any available pepper, iron,
-
cubeb, and ginger. It should set out at the beginning
-
of the season for the islands (al-diyyab < Sanskrit or Malayalam dvīpa, "islands") to pick up a little
-
coir, fine aloeswood, mango (?), and coconuts,

since all these are in demand. If

they manage to fit out (a ship) in Aden and they want my
