الوصف

State document, in Arabic script. Decree of Shīrkūh, the vizier of al-ʿĀḍid, concerning the monks of Mt. Sinai. The caliph grants al-ʿĀḍid privileges to Macarius, bishop of Sinai and his monks, and prohibits exactions by the governors of al-Ṭūr or interference with monks traveling to Egypt.

  2. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

  7. مالوف لهم وعادة وان لهم رسوما مقررة من الايام الحاكمية
  8. وبايديهم سجلات شرفوا بها من هذه الدولة العالية العلوية وسالو
  9. تجديد ما بايديهم خرج امرنا بابداع هذا المنشور ما رسمناه من 
  10. الوصية بهم والبعث على رعاية جانبهم وتسهيل مطالبهم وحملهم 
  11. على عادتهم وانالتهم من الاحتفاء بهم غاية ارادتهم واعانتهم
  12. على ما يعود باصلاح امورهم ويوجب انبساط امالهم وشرح
  13. صدورهم ورعايتهم حيث كانوا من البلاد وانتخابهم بما يجمع
  14. لهم من الطرائف من الخيرات والتلاد وحملهم على مضمون ما
  15. بايديهم من اعفائهم مما احدثه الولاة بالحصون الطورية عليهم من
  16. الرسوم لانفسهم التي يعتنون في طلبها فينفقون بسببه وان يعفي اثارها
  17. ...ويمنع العربان من الدخول عليهم في دياراتهم واختطاف ما
  18. يحصلونه من اقواتهم ويذخرونه لقرى المجتازين بهم وضيافتهم
  19. ويحملوا في المسامحات بالحقوق والرسوم والاحكار والمقاسمات
  20. والاعشار والمقاطعات على ما تضمنته السجلات النبوية التي
  21. بايديهم والمنع من التطرق اليها بتبديل وسد الطريق الى التأول في
  22. شيء منها وقطع السبيل ورعاية كافة احباسهم والمتصرفين في
  23. سبلهم والمستخدمين في جباية اجر احباسهم وحماية اجرائهم في
  24. تحصيل المستغلات وايناسهم وكف الضرر عمن...يقدم عليهم
  25. ...وقصر الايدي المتطاولة الى اذى من يتوجه اليهم من الاعمال
  26. المصرية ومن يؤمنونه لتحصيل اقواتهم من البلال القريبة
  27. والقضية ونهى عن اعانتهم والبادية وقصدهم بابطال
  28. الرسوم المحدثة وقصر الايدي العادية
  29. فمن قراه او قرئ عليه من كافة الامراء وولاة الحرب بالشرقية
  30. ادام الله تاييدهم وولاة الحصون الطورية ادام الله عزهم وجميع
  31. المشارفين النواب والحماة والشادين والمتصرفين اجميعن فليعمل
  32. الممثل فيه ولينته الى ما يوجبه حكمه ويقتضيه وليحذر من تجاوزه
  33. وتعديه بعد ثبوته بالدواوين بالحضرة المطهرة صلوات الله عليها
  34. واقراره بايديهم بعد العمل بمقتضاه والانتهاء الى مضمونه وفحواه
  35. ان شا الله تعالى

  1. Praise be to God, Lord of the universe
  2. In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate
  3. An open decree, the order for the riting of which was given by [the servant of] our lord and master the Imam al-ʿĀḍid li-Dīn Allā, Commander of the Faithful,
  4. ...God's blessings be upon him, his pure ancestors and noble sons....
  5. and when there was submitted to our presence a petition headed by the name of Macarius, bishop of
  6. Mount Sinai, and his monks, in which they stated that they had withdrawn to worship God, and follow in this a fixed habit
  7. and custom; and that they have rules established from the time of al-Ḥākim,
  8. and possess decrees by which this exalted ʿAlid empire as honoured them; and asked that
  9. these decrees be renewed-our order was issued
  10. to include in this open decree our command to take care of them and our insistence to guard them, facilitate their business, treat them
  11. according to their custom, grant them the utmost respect they can wish for, help them
  12. to obtain what improves their condition and brings about the flourishing of their hopes and the gladdening
  13. of their hearts, to look after them wherever they are, behave towards them in such a way as to
  14. bestow upon them bounties both new and old-established, treat them according to their privileges
  15. so as to exempt them from dues newly imposed upon them by the governors of the fortresses of al-Ṭūr for themselves,
  16. during the exaction of which they [the monks] are vexed and on account of which they become poor; and that the traces of this be obliterated...;
  17. to prevent Bedouins from entering their monasteries
  18. and grabbing the food which they acquire and hoard in order to entertain those who visit them;
  19. to treat them in respect to exemptions from taxes, dues, rents,
  20. sharing tithes and fiefs in accordance with the contents of the prophetical decrees
  21. which are in their possession; to prevent lest these decees should be changed or their contents explained away as to any particular;
  22. to protect all their companions and those employed on their business
  23. or appointed to collect the rents of their endowments and
  24. defend and treat well their hired men while they gather their crops;
  25. to keep away harm from those who come to them and hold back forcible hands from damaging those who visit them from
  26. Egyptian provinces or whom they entrust to get them their food from near
  27. and far lands, to prevent Bedouins and settled people from vexing them, and turn towards them so as to abolish
  28. taxes newly introduced and hold back inimical hands.
  29. Let all amirs and military governors in the Sharqiyya province
  30. (may God prolong their glory) and all
  31. intendants, lieutenants, supervisors and officials who read this or to whom this is read out, act according
  32. to what is ordered in it and follow what its command entails, and beware from transgressing it,
  33. after its registration in the offices in the pure residence (God's blessings upon it),
  34. and having been deposited in their hands after acting according to it and obeying its contents,
  35. if God (may He be exalted) wills.
