- Praise be to God, Lord of the universe
- In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate
- An open decree, the order for the riting of which was given by [the servant of] our lord and master the Imam al-ʿĀḍid li-Dīn Allā, Commander of the Faithful,
- ...God's blessings be upon him, his pure ancestors and noble sons....
- and when there was submitted to our presence a petition headed by the name of Macarius, bishop of
- Mount Sinai, and his monks, in which they stated that they had withdrawn to worship God, and follow in this a fixed habit
- and custom; and that they have rules established from the time of al-Ḥākim,
- and possess decrees by which this exalted ʿAlid empire as honoured them; and asked that
- these decrees be renewed-our order was issued
- to include in this open decree our command to take care of them and our insistence to guard them, facilitate their business, treat them
- according to their custom, grant them the utmost respect they can wish for, help them
- to obtain what improves their condition and brings about the flourishing of their hopes and the gladdening
- of their hearts, to look after them wherever they are, behave towards them in such a way as to
- bestow upon them bounties both new and old-established, treat them according to their privileges
- so as to exempt them from dues newly imposed upon them by the governors of the fortresses of al-Ṭūr for themselves,
- during the exaction of which they [the monks] are vexed and on account of which they become poor; and that the traces of this be obliterated...;
- to prevent Bedouins from entering their monasteries
- and grabbing the food which they acquire and hoard in order to entertain those who visit them;
- to treat them in respect to exemptions from taxes, dues, rents,
- sharing tithes and fiefs in accordance with the contents of the prophetical decrees
- which are in their possession; to prevent lest these decees should be changed or their contents explained away as to any particular;
- to protect all their companions and those employed on their business
- or appointed to collect the rents of their endowments and
- defend and treat well their hired men while they gather their crops;
- to keep away harm from those who come to them and hold back forcible hands from damaging those who visit them from
- Egyptian provinces or whom they entrust to get them their food from near
- and far lands, to prevent Bedouins and settled people from vexing them, and turn towards them so as to abolish
- taxes newly introduced and hold back inimical hands.
- Let all amirs and military governors in the Sharqiyya province
- (may God prolong their glory) and all
- intendants, lieutenants, supervisors and officials who read this or to whom this is read out, act according
- to what is ordered in it and follow what its command entails, and beware from transgressing it,
- after its registration in the offices in the pure residence (God's blessings upon it),
- and having been deposited in their hands after acting according to it and obeying its contents,
- if God (may He be exalted) wills.
- Written in the Second of Jumādā of the year Five-hundred Sixty Four.
