الوصف

Bifolio of a text in Judaeo-Arabic containing elaborate recipes for testing the quality of precious stones. The righthand page of verso details the procedure for a pearl. The first step is to soak it in citron vinegar for a week; a subsequent step is to insert it into a fish's belly and cook the fish; a further step is to feed it to a chicken and observe the chicken until it defecates the pearl; finally you bake it in an oven. If after all this the pearl is still clear without any turbidness, you will know that it is of the highest quality (aḥsan mā yakūn).
