الوصف

A photocopy of a Muslim court deed documenting the endowment of properties to the Karaite community in Jerusalem, in 1519 CE. Current location of the original document, or how or from where its photocopy arrived the NLI, are unknown at the moment. The document and its content were mentioned during a conflict over control of Qaraite endowments in Jerusalem during the 1930's, as is discussed in Yosef Algamil's book 'History of the Qaraites' [Hebrew], vol. II, pp. 337-365 (like PGPID 40644 , PGPID 40645). The document details the endowment of "four apartments and their rights" to the Qaraite community. The location of the asset is "in the neighborhood (ḥāra) of al-Sharf which is near the neighborhood of the Qaraite Jews (al-mulaṣiqa li- ḥārat al-yahūd al-qarāʾiyīn)". The asset borders in the west with "the alley of the mill (ḥōsh al-tāḥūna) known as Ibn Basity". The endower was Ṣadaqa b. Yosef b. ʿAbd al-Wāli, who is described as a Qaraite money changer from Damascus. The deed is dated 14th of Shawwāl 925 AH (9.10.1519 CE). The file at the NLI includes, besides the photocopy, a full translation to Hebrew, approved by an Israeli notary (in 1976 CE) and bears a stamp of "the Qaraite community of Israel".
