الوصف

Letter to the Nubian eparch Īsū in Ibrīm from Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad [ ] ibn Naṣr [ ]. The sender reports that the eparch's slave Bishr arrived just as the sender himself was leaving for Nubia. Bishr had brought three dīnārs with which it seems the eparch had instructed him to acquire bitumen. The sender arranged for the bitumen to be purchased before leaving for Nubia. Subsequently Bishr was also instructed to purchase two water skins in which to store the bitumen. Al-Ḥusayn ensured that the bitumen was loaded onto the ship before his departure. He apologizes that since he is writing from Dendur rather than Aswan, he is unable to send cash with this letter. PG. Khan, Qaṣr Ibrīm, doc. 20.

  2. وصل كتاب صاحب الخيل ووزير الملك اطال الل ه بقاه وادام 
  3. عزه وسلامته وحراسته ووقفت عليه وسررت بوصوله 
  4. ووصل غلامه بشر يوم الثلثة خروجي الى بلد النوبة ووجدت في ذلك 
  5. ان صاحب الخيل انفذ ثلثة دنانير فطلبتهم منه ليشتري له الزفت قبل
  6. خروجي من البلد فجمعت ثلثة درهم حقا حتى يشتري له الزفت 
  7. وبعد ان خرجت الى بلد النوبة [يوم [الـ]ـثلثة  [بـ]ـعث صاحــ[ـبى ......] 
  8. اليه عشرين قيراط يشتري له عشرو[ن ....] 
  9. اليه قربتين من عندي يجعل فيها الزفت وقد جعـ[ـلت الزفت فيها] 
  10. وحملتها واركبت مركب للمعدى بالتجارة وبالله لقد سررت
  11. بكتابه فايشما كان لك من حاجة فاكتب الي فاني اقضىيها 
  12. له وافعل له ما يلزمني صغيرة كانت او كبيرة فلا يقطع

  1. In the name of God the Merciful and Compassionate.
  2. The letter of the Master of the Horses and vizier of theking—may God prolong his life and cause
  3. his strength, safety and guardianship to endure—has arrived, and I have taken note of it and am pleased with its arrival.
  4. His slave boy, Bishr, arrived on Wednesday as I was leaving for the land of Nubia. I found in it (the letter)
  5. that the Master of the Horses sent three dīnārs and I asked on your behalf for bitumen to be bought for you before
  6. I left the land. I collected three dirhams commission in order for him to buy for him (i.e., the Master of the Horses) the bitumen.
  7. When I left for the land of the Nubians on Wednesday, my colleague sent [       ]
  8. to him twenty qīrāṭs in order to buy for him twenty [      ]
  9. to him two water skins from me, in which the bitumen could be put, and I put [the bitumen in them]
  10. and I loaded them on a ship of the purveyor of merchandise. By God, I was delighted
  11. with his letter. Whatever request you have, write to me, and I shall carry it out
  12. and perform my duty, whether it be small or large. May he (the Master of the Horses) not cease

  3. be—if God, the Almighty and Exalted, wishes—
