الوصف

Legal document from the high court (al-Bāb al-ʿĀlī) in Cairo. In Arabic script. Dated: 17 Ṣafar 1228 AH = 19 February 1813 CE. Judge: Muṣṭafā سنجب(?) al-Qāḍī. Also present were Muḥammad Khalīl al-Tabbānī (?التباني), the doorkeeper (bawwāb) of Wakālat al-Ṣāgha (his genealogy is then given); al-Ḥājj Mūsā b. Ḥasan al-Azarmalī (? الازرملي), a merchant (tājir) in the same Wakāla; another doorkeeper of the same wakāla, ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-Karīm; and Muḥammad Āghā Ṣādiq al-Jūkhdār in the service of the qāḍī. In which Isḥāq b. Binyamin Curiel (كورييل) al-Yahūdī al-Ifranjī, a merchant in the Wakālat al-Khaṭib, the communal official for the waqf of the Jewish poor who live in the "Frankish" synagogue (وهو المستخدم على جهة وقف اليهود القاطنين بكنيسة الافرنج الكاينة بحارة اليهود وداخل درب قاعة القصر؟ الفضة؟), purchases with the funds of the waqf two adjacent arcades (riwāq; الرواقين الملاحقين لبعضهما بعضا; the scribe in fact wrote راوق instead of رواق here, but everywhere else the document has رواق) in Darb al-Nuṣayrī from al-Ḥājj Sālim the jeweler (jawharjī) in the Sūq al-Ṣāgha the son of al-Ḥājj Yūsuf. It seems the property rights were previously established in a document from the court of Jāmiʿ al-Ḥākim dated 12 Rajab 1225 AH = 13 August 1810 CE. The price is given in riyals (ريالات), each riyal equal to 90 medins; the numbers are difficult to read and will require further examination. Six witnesses sign at the bottom. At the top, the judge's tawqīʿ and seal. On verso there are filing notes in Judaeo-Arabic and Arabic script: - צרב אלנציר - حجة لجهة الوقف ببنا رواقين بحارة اليهود بدرب النصيري The names Yiṣḥaq and Binyamin Curiel appear in other Geniza documents from this time period, very likely the same people.
