الوصف

Fragment in Syriac, likely a hitherto unknown (Malkite?) liturgical polemic. It was attempted to identify the text by searching the Simtho corpus but to no avail. Even most of the phraseology does not turn up in the corpus. If the phrase ܫܝܕܩ ܐܥܩܕ ܐܡ “when he cries out, ‘Holy’” (recto 8–9) refers to the Sanctus in the liturgy, the text may be a liturgical polemic. If so, the verb ܬܢܐ ܫܡܫܡ “you perform” (verso 17) will be referring to liturgical performance. And if indeed the text is Malkite, that would explain the lack of support in the Simtho corpus as Malkite literature is understudied. The script is Estrangela with a porbable date between the eighth and tenth century. If the text is indeed Malkite, its provenance might be Syria. (George Kiraz and Sebastian Brock)
