4. Only fifteen thousand ghurūsh, nothing else.

5. The reason for its [the document’s] composition:

6. Prayers for the Prophet. On blessed Wednesday on the twenty-third of the month

7. of Rajab the solitary in the year 1244, twelve hundred and forty-four [28 January 1829], the Chief Rabbi Bārkāra [sic] acknowledged and recognised

8. and witnessed for himself, no one else, completely fitting

   the legal description [of a legitimate testifier],

9. that he owed and had in his possession, by proper legal right, what he owed to the merchant

10. Elkān Amīnādhāb from the property of the orphans, an

    amount totalling the 15,000 ghurūsh

11. mentioned above, half of which [next two words scrawled

    over] is 7,500

12. ghurūsh. The aforementioned Chief Rabbi took a vow upon himself to God the exalted that as long as this

13. amount is in his possession, he will pay every month that passes, beginning on this day, 300 ghurūsh to

14. the merchant Elkān. The aforementioned Chief Rabbi un- dertakes to pay the amount, per the aforementioned vow,

15. which he fulfils and promotes [?] to the merchant Elkān.

    The guarantor of that aforementioned amount

16. with the aforementioned vow is the merchant Shimʿūn

    Fransīs, who has affixed his mark

17. and sealed it—a proper, legal receipt, with affirmation and

    acceptance and no constraint or coercion.

18. And I seal it and sign it as proof of it, and God the exalted

    is the best of witnesses.
