الوصف

Legal document in Arabic script. The beginnings of 22 lines are preserved along with part of a witness signature at the bottom. The first line provides a date, interestingly using the Coptic calendar: "the middle of Ṭūba 437 AH," i.e., January 1046 CE. This may signify the beginning of a payment period. The next line refers to equal monthly installments (اقساطا متساوية كل شهر...). The next line refers to payment of "the installment for the following year" (يقوم بقسط السنة التالية). The next line reads, "to the end of it, the middle of Ṭūba [43]8 AH," i.e., January 1047 CE. Two lines further down: "this district, and he will obtain the receipts" (هذه الناحية وياخذ الوصولات...); this suggests a fiscal context, perhaps a ḍamān for tax collection? There follow several lines of legalese. The beginning of the next fragment refers twice to a ḍamān (l. 1 may read من مال ضمانه). The date 438 appears again three lines from the bottom of the document, suggesting that it was actually drawn up in 438, though this is somewhat puzzling as the mention of 437 near the beginning seems to refer to a future payment period. Merits further examination. Reused on verso for Hebrew piyyuṭim. Join: Marina Rustow.
