الوصف
Deed of sale of a property on recto, with multiple related addenda documents on verso. Dated 2 Muḥarram 777 AH on recto (1375 CE). In the introduction to her edition, Jane Hathaway notes: "In this badly torn sharīʿa court document, dated 2 Muḥarram 777 AH/3 June 1375 CE, an unnamed woman transfers one-quarter of a large house to her son Sharaf al-Dīn Mūsā. Much of the documentʾs recto comprises a description of the property and its boundaries. The house is located in Ḥārat Zuwayla, a neighbourhood in the northwest of the original Fatimid city of al-Qāhira, southwest of Bāb al-Futūḥ and northwest of Bāb al-Zuwayla, respectively the northern and southern gates of al-Qāhira. Ḥārat Zuwayla became the centre of Coptic residence in al-Qāhira following the catastrophic Muslim–Coptic religious riots of 721AH/1321 CE. These riots, triggered by the Mamluk sultan al-Nāṣir Muḥammadʾs demolition of a Coptic church to make way for his eponymous pond (al-Birkat al-Nāṣiriyya), resulted in a mass conversion of Copts to Islam. Afterward, the Coptic Patriarch settled permanently in Ḥārat Zuwayla, which housed one of the two Coptic churches in al-Qāhira to have been rebuilt following the riots. (In the seventeenth century, however, the patriarchate moved to Ḥārat al-Rūm.) Thus it is perhaps unsurprising that the property at the heart of this court case is initially 'endowed to the Christians' (muwaqaffa li’l-Naṣrāniyya), probably Coptic Christians.... Overall, our document illustrates a fundamental change in status of a property that, over half a century after the disastrous 1321 riots, was still endowed to the Coptic community, if not its oldest church. Yet in the succeeding three-quarters of a century, it was deaccesioned from the Coptic waqf to become the private property of a series of Muslim, or at least predominantly Muslim, owners."
