الوصف

Recto: Court record in Arabic script. Regarding a surgical operation by a physician. Nāṣir b. Jibrīl asks the Jewish physician Makārim b. Isḥāq to perform surgery on the eye of his daughter, Sutayt, which is affected by pus behind the cornea. If the operation is successful, the payment is set at 2 dirhams; if the operation is a failure, the payment will be negotiated. The document is witnessed and signed by ʿAbd al-Qawī b. ʿAbd al-Muʾṭī b. Hilāl al-Anṣārī. Dating: ca. 1250 CE. (Information from CUDL)

  4. المذكور مزاولة عينها بسكين المرموظ

  5. فان من الله تعالى بالنظر كان تلطفه در [همین]

  6. وان كان خلافه فتقضاه وقدره والطـ[ـبيب]

Recto 

  1. Nāṣir ibn Jibrīl came to Makārim ibn Isḥāq, the Jewish physician,  

  2. together with his natural daughter called Sutayt,  

  3. in whose left eye there was pus. He requested the aforementioned physician  

  4. to treat her eye with a sharp knife.  

  5. If God, exalted is he, grants sight, his remuneration will be two dirhams.  

  6. If the outcome is the opposite, he will evaluate the fee accordingly and the physician   

  7. will be free from liability for that.

  1. I was called to witness this.  

  2. It was written by ʿAbd al-Qawī ibn ʿAbd al-Muʿṭī  

  3. ibn Hilāl al-Anṣārī.
