الوصف

Will of a terminally ill person. Probably a draft. Goitein's index card identifies the handwriting as that of Natan b. Shelomo ha-Kohen. The testimony was collected on Saturday the 19th of [...] 1453 Seleucid (= 1141/42 CE). (The month was accidentally omitted.) The testator, Abū l-Ḥasan b. Ḥasan al-Sukkarī, died the following day. He was located in the home of Natan b. Shemuʾel he-Ḥaver, who is known to have run a hospice for the sick. Abū l-Ḥasan acknowledges having received six dinars' worth of sugar from Abū Naṣr in order to sell it, but he never had a chance to do so. Sawād al-Sukkarī is also owed 3 dinars which should be paid from the shop, in addition to a capitation tax (jāliya) payment. He excludes his cousin (ibn ʿamma) Shibl from his inheritance by paying him 2 dinars. He then describes to Natan b. Shemuʾel the type of shroud and funeral clothing he desires. In the margin there is an added note stating that his wife is owed 30 dinars by way of muʾakhkhar. He is also owed 700 dirhams by Abū Naṣr al-Ṣayrafī. There is a translation by Norman Stillman in Goitein's attached notes. There are Aramaic pen trials on verso (נוסיא דקלמוסא).

Norman Stillman's digital translation (1967).
  1. The transaction that took place before us as witnesses was as follows:
  2. On the Sabbath, the 19th of the month in the year 1453 [Sel.] we were present at the home of the Ḥaver Natan.
  3. We found there Abū l-Ḥasan, the sugar merchant ill, lying upon
  4. his bed. His senses were present and his mind was sound. He knew what
  5. he was saying, and what was said to him just as well people who conduct affairs
  6. in the marketplace. He knew each one of us by name and person. We asked him
  7. concerning the time, and he answered that as one should answer, and after that he left instructions
  8. regarding his opligations to the following persons. Stating: I took from the Elder Abū Naṣr
  9. //sugar// for six dinars in order to sell it and pay him its cost, but Fate has caught up with me.
  10. It [the sugar] is in my shop as it was. I have not done any transaction with it, and he has recieved a third of its price.
  11. It will be returned to him. I am responsible to Sawād, the sugar-merchant, for three dinars, which should be paid
  12. from the shop. I am responsible for paying the remainder of the poll tax for two dinars. Pay this in my name.
  13. I have excluded from my estate Shibl, the son of my paternal aunt with two dinars. It should be paid
  14. to him. Then he turned to the Ḥaver Rabbi Natan and said: I wish that you wrap me in a fine burial garment,
  15. have cut for me a Baghdadi Niṣfiyya and a jubbah of new ʿatāba cloth,
  16. a turban, and a new chest. And these are the last provisions of
  17. my property. And if there remains anything after all these funeral expenses and after whatever is to be pain in my name, it is to be a gift
  18. to my maternal aunt. And he entrusted the Ḥaver with all that was to be transacted on his behalf
  19. as two witnesses. And we left him. And his death fell on Sunday the 20th,
  20. succumbing to that illness of his.

  1. And to my wife I leave 30 dinars. It should be paid to her. And Abū Naṣr al-Kohen al-Ṣayrafī owes me 750 dirhams and with those my debts should be paid.
