Yosef b. Moshe Ben Yijū

Description / Bio

"Joseph b. Moses was praised in his youth as a diligent and discerning student while he was completing his studies in Fustat, and he too later took up a post as a religious functionary--we find him writing a dowry list." (Goitein & Friedman, India Book, pg. 85) As a young man, Yosef studied in Fustat alongside his cousin, Peraḥyā b. Nissīm, likely under the tutelage of Ḥananel b. Shemuʾel Ibn al-Amshāṭī, an in-law of Maimonides. Yosef married another cousin, Peraḥyā's sister, who remained with Yosef's parents while he completed his studies.
