Description / Bio

Nubian enslaved woman and mother of an enslaved child, Umm Nūbiyya was later manumitted and gave birth to a free Jewish daughter. Craig Perry notes that she "was purchased by a Jewish merchant in Ashkelon along with her daughter [who died before 1093 CE].... After her owner freed and married her, Umm Nūbiyya had another daughter named Milāḥ." (Information from PGP and Craig Perry, Slavery and the Jews of Medieval Egypt, Appendices 1-2, no. 111, no. 41)
