Description

Legal record. Written and signed by the judge Natan b. Shelomo ha-Kohen; also signed by Saʿadya b. Menashshe ha-Kohen. Certifying that Abū l-Faḍāʾil b. Salāma b. Saʿīd has received 10 dinars from Abū ʿAlī al-Jubaylī, 7 1/8 in gold coins (ʿayn) and 3 in silver (wariq dirhams). Dated: Sunday, 11 Heshvan 1437 Seleucid = 10 October 1125 CE. This is how Goitein read the date, but based on comparison with the letters around Natan's signature, it appears that the year is אתלי) 1440) Seleucid, which would yield 7 October 1128 CE. It is not clear why Natan would have written אתלי instead of the expected אתמ; since this was only a month into the new decade, maybe he hadn't yet broken the habit of starting his dates with אתל. In another hand underneath, there is a request to find appropriate Bible verses (bawāsīq) for the ceremony of thanksgiving after safe arrival (birkat ha-gomel). On recto, in the same hand as the second part of verso, there are Judaeo-Arabic translations of selected verses (Psalms 1:5-6; 2:1-4 with Hebrew incipits). (Information in part from Goitein's index card and CUDL.)
