Legal document T-S Ar.41.76

Description

Legal document in Arabic script. In which [..]āba bt. Sulaymān b. Yaḥyā al-Isrāʾīliyya appoints her husband Naḥum b. Barhūn al-Isrāʾīlī as her agent for all her affairs in all legal and governmental settings (refers to al-quḍāt wa-l-ḥukkām wa-l-sulṭān wa-khulafāhim). Contains an official endorsement in a thick pen on the top left corner: "thabata wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāhi wa-lahū al-minna." On verso there are 6 columns of all the parshiyot of the year and alphabet exercises. Goitein: "Looks like imposed on boy as punishment." In the first column there are names: [...] b. Neḥemya he-Ḥaver Rosh ha-Pereq b. Avraham Aluf he-Ḥaver Beḥir ha-Yeshiva Rosh ha-Seder. The handwriting resembles that of T-S 16.6 (PGPID 5303), which likewise mentions אברהם אלוף החבר בחיר הישיבה נבע. It is possible that the Naḥum b. Barhūn from recto is the Arabic version of the name Neḥemya b. Avraham, but this is speculative and it would require that he had died in the interim between the writing of recto and the writing of verso. (Information in part from Goitein's index card.)
