Description

Recto: deed of sale in Hebrew for a compound in Damascus (a large and small house) at the Market of the Jews, for 280 ʿAzīzī dinars. Dated 47[..] (= 940–1040 CE, but according to Goitein ʿAzīzī dinars were only minted from 976 CE) in Fusṭāṭ. The seller is Mevorakh b. Ṣemaḥ Ibn al-Mallāḥ, and the buyer is Bishr b. Shelomo. Goitein notes one or both of the men involved may have been Persian as the deed states that it cannot be invalidated by any Hebrew, Persian or Arabic documents produced in court (1983:286, 353, 363; but compare T-S 12.496, T-S NS 320.75, and T-S 16.56 which have similar formulae). Names of witnesses are not preserved. Verso: liturgy entitled ‘[...]קבל אל הפט’. (Information in part from CUDL and Goitein's index card.)
