Description

Fragment of a Christian marriage contract written in Arabic on parchment and dated Muḥarram 554AH. The bottom half of the contract was reused as writing support for an index of lections in Syriac script in the shape of a bifolio. The contract uses regular Arabic legal formulary with a Christian twist: the marriage was concluded according to the Christian law (al-sharīʿa al-masīḥiyya) and the document mentions the three patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob for instance. The contract was witnessed by at least two priests (قس). Two deacons (شماس) certified the status and legal competence of the bride as well as the absence of blood relation between the spouses. Two stars were (later?) added at the bottom. (AP)
