Description

Fragment of a letter in Ladino that was recorded on an oddly large piece of paper (based on the orientation of the body and marginal text visible on the recto). The letter was signed by a certain Yosef Jam[ī]la(?) (or Jamāl?) and appears to have been sealed with red wax on the verso (and was probably delivered). Some of the preserved content: "It came out to 306 grossos. . . the remainder. . . except to pray from God. . . (פואירון טיריזיינטו אי שיש גורושוש . . . איל רישטו קי . . . שינו רוגאר אלשית . . . ). The paper was reused for Arabic-script writing exercises by a highly trained scribe, as well as various grids filled with numerals (magic squares?). One of the exercises on the recto contains the first name Ibrāhīm. The paleography of both layers of usage suggest a dating of 16th-century or later. MCD/ASE
