Description

Legal document(s) in Arabic script. Dating: Late Mamlūk or early Ottoman-era. The one on recto (the secondary use) is a power of attorney drawn up under the judge Abū ʿAbdallāh Muḥammad al-Damīrī al-Mālikī. One of the parties is Ibrāhīm b. Hārūn al-Yahūdī; the name al-Muʿallim Isḥāq is also mentioned later in the same line. It seems that the former is appointing the latter as his agent for suing al-Ḥajj Yūsuf and al-Ḥājj Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Maqdisī. Written on the 27th of Rajab [year missing]. There are signatures of witnesses at the bottom; one of them includes the name ʿAbd al-Qādir. There are Hebrew script notations in the upper and lower margins of the recto. The two text blocks at the bottom appear almost identical to each other and involve calculations in mithqāls. A previous PGP description identified the judge as the Maliki qāḍī Yaḥyā al-Damīrī al-Mālikī, who was the last Maliki qāḍī al-quḍāt to serve the Mamluk Sultanate before its fall to the Ottomans (cf. al-Ghazzī, al-Kawākib al-sāʼira bi-aʻyān al-miʼa al-ʻāshira, 1:313). However the judge's name here appears to be Abū ʿAbdallāh Muḥammad.
