Description

State document, in Arabic script. The perfumers/druggists (ʿaṭṭārīn) petition the Ayyubid sultan al-Malik al-Ṣālīḥ (Najm al-Dīn Ayyūb) about the injustice of the notables (ʿurafa) who have constructed the garden of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ (believed to have been constructed near the Bāb al-Lūq). Their trade has been affected by this, and their money has been unfairly confiscated. “The slaves, druggists/perfumers of Fusṭāṭ, are oppressed by the injustice of the ʿurafā (notables) in the construction of the garden of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ, may God glorify him, and they have been affected in indescribable magnitude by the seizure of business arrangements/partnerships (the scribe may have intended to write قطع المصانعات, meaning "bribes"). They demanded from us a raṭl for the sake of ... 20 raṭls and ... 3,000 dīnārs. There remained neither Jew nor Christian ….”

  3. ايامه واجعله منصور ابدا     وينهو ان المماليك العطارين بمصر 
  4. افتقرو من ظلم العرفا في عمارة 〚ا〛بستان الملك الصالح عزه الله وحصل لهم
  5. ما لا يعرف مقداره من قطع المصالحات فطلب منهم رطل من حاجة

  1. In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate. 

  2. The slaves kiss the ground in the lofty, lordly presence of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ, may God perpetuate

  3. his rule and make him victorious forever, and inform (him) that the slaves, the chemists of Fusṭāṭ,

  4. have been impoverished by the injustice of the notables in the construction of the garden of al-Malik al-Ṣāliḥ, may God glorify him. 

  5. Incalculable (damage) has been done to them by the disruption of their business arrangements, since there has been demanded from them a raṭl for the sake of . . . 

  6. . . . 20 raṭls. They are once again selling it . . .  

  7. . . . 3,000 dīnārs. There remained neither a Jew nor a Christian . . .
