Description

Informally written witness statement for a legal document. Dating: probably early 13th century. Attesting that the wife of Bū ʿAlī b. Daʾūd the perfumer sold a quarter of a house which was her inheritance from her late father Bū Saʿīd, to Abū l-Thanāʾ al-Shaykh al-Muhadhdhab al-Sukkarī for the sum of 150 dinars. If these readings are correct, this is one of the most expensive houses attested in the Geniza (see Goitein, Med Soc II, 287). Verso is more damaged but seems to be the continuation; mentions a deposit and mentions the role of her husband Bū ʿAlī. (Information in part from CUDL)
