State document: T-S Ar.40.118

State document T-S Ar.40.118

Description

Mamluk-era state document in Arabic script. Dated: 675 AH = 1276/77 CE. Contains various annotations by clerks and is endorsed by both thin and thick pen. It may be concerned with wages. Mentions at least one amīr (maybe ʿIzz al-Dīn or ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn), the mutawallī of the al-Gharbiyya(?) district. There is a phrase that looks like "li-muwaẓẓaf mustaẓhir al-wilāya," but the meaning is opaque. On verso there are two additional annotations ("qubiḍa min dhālika nuqra... qubiḍa ayḍan...") indicating sums collected, with Greek/Coptic numerals. Also mentions a bureau "dār al-wukalā(?) bi-dār al-malik". (Information in part from Baker/Polliack catalog.) Merits further examination.
