Description

Ketubba, likely from Cairo given the mention of the Nile (נילוס) in the locational clause in line four and the witness signature of Yeḥezqel Ḥefeṣ. Dated Tammuz 554[.] AM which is 1780-89 CE. The final digit in the year is lost to damage. Most of the informative phrases of the ketubba are effaced but the groom Shelomo has some connection to Salonika (perhaps his place of residence or birth). The signature in the middle of base section is likely that of the groom, confirming his surname as Elīyakīm. The bride's first name is effaced (?מרא) but her deceased father's full name is Meʾīr ha-Levi in line 7. The witness signature on the left side is that of Yeḥezqel Ḥefeṣ, a scribe and rabbi in Cairo during the 1780s-1820s. ASE. MCD.
