Description

Writing exercises in which the student practiced Judaeo-Romance words and names on at least one occasion in both Hebrew and Arabic script: פארין בן שביליינה بارين بن شبيليينة (Paren ben Shbiliyina). Although the first part of the name is difficult to interpret the second component may be related to medieval orthographies for the city Sevilla in Andalusia. There is also a fragmented phrase in late medieval or early modern Latin-script that could be Italian or, perhaps, an Iberian Romance language (this is likely a different scribal). Another name in Hebrew-script provides further evidence of the linguistic ambiguities of this fragment: דומינגינתה בנת צופיה (Domingenta bint Ṣofia). MCD.
