Description
Business letter, from Khiyār b. Salmān Raqqāq (the parchment-maker) to an unknown addressee. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dating: Likely ca. late 11th century. Written by a scribe, ʿAyyāsh, who identifies himself and sends greetings in the margin. The language and style are quite elevated, including unusual blessings and obscure words. The first request from the addressee is that he represent the sender in humbling himself (ʿanāʾak) in the majlis of Abū Zikrī [...] Saʿadya (this might be the Nagid Abū Zikrī Yehuda b. Saʿadya, r. ca. ca. 1065 to 1077 or 1079) in order to achieve a reconciliation (āsiyan). Then, he is asked to meet with his maternal uncle Avraham b. Menashshe b. M[...], "perhaps on a day that his majlis is crowded," in order to convey the contents of this letter (in as public a way as possible). The letter continues, "If he is too grand for (receiving) gratitude from me. . . ." The sender urges the addressee not to neglect this "very important" matter. Greetings from various people in the margin. T-S NS J38r may be in the same hand.
