Description
Two fragments from a ledger of accounts concerning ships arriving in Egypt. In Judaeo-Arabic. Dated: 20 Ramaḍān (9)46 AH = 29 January 1540 CE. In the same hand as ENA 3730.2 (PGPID 39645), a ledger of accounts concerning ships departing from Egypt dating to five years earlier. Also likely related to T-S J1.41 + T-S NS 321.7m (PGPID 12751), which has similar content. These fragments may all be from the same ledger but in the hand of two different scribes. ENA 2898.4: Recto is headed "the ship of Kara ʿAlī arriving from Antalya on 20 Ramaḍān '46." (ספינת כרא עלי וארץ מן אנטליא פי כ רמצן סנת מו). The entries underneath are headed by individuals' names (Muṣṭafā, Muḥammad, Ḥājj ʿUthmān, and Maḥmūd), and underneath the names appear short lists of commodities and quantities. One of the commodities is opium (afyūn). The list continues on verso with Greek-sounding names (אנטוני בר(?)) and באסיליקו (Basiliko)) as well as a header סרמאיא רייץ ובחרי ("..., captain, and sailor"). The term "sarmiyya" also appears together with the term "baḥriyya" on one of the related fragments so may be another maritime professional title. Underneath there are the sums for "the entire ship" (jumlat al-markab). ENA 2898.3: Recto is headed, "the closing (? taghlīq) of the ship of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ʿAbbās." The entries underneath include the names ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Qūqū, Salim(?) Nājiḥ, Salāma b. Jaʿfar, ʿAlī Jājūr(?), Kātib Taslīm(?) Rayyiṣ, and Muḥammad. On verso the names include קוליוש, Muḥammad Qushtīn(?), ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Shuhayb Ḥamāwī, and another captain with a puzzling (Turkic?) name יאגיזי. Various commodities are listed in the itemized entries, including soap, silk, rosewater, ḥalāwa, alum, and apricots (unless Mishmish is part of the name of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz). MCD/ASE
