Cheat sheet:

  • If you're looking for a word with one missing letter, use a period. Two missing letters, use two periods or {2}. Increase the number in the curly brackets to increase the number of characters, or insert a range with a comma in between, ex. {0,5}.
  • If you don't know how many characters are missing, use .*.
  • If you know which characters you want, use square brackets to find multiple spellings, ex. [יו] for yud or vav.

Documents describing unique or interesting legal cases were occasionally copied in order to serve the clerks of the court as reference (Goitein also suggests that the document might have been copied to serve as an accompaniment to a legal discussion. […] On the other hand, the detailed description of the entire process, the dates, the exact monetary sums, the number of rings and their type, all testify that this was a real case. Goitein suggests that the document represent an agreement made by a poor couple. […] However, Ashur claims that this date is the date in which the document was copied to the legal documents file in court and in the same occasion the title was written, since the recto also has the year recorded at the header (Assaf missed the word 'year' in the header of the recto.

Letter from Maʿtūq al-Yahūdī. In Arabic script. Dated 3 Rajab [12]48 AH = 26 November 1832 CE. […] The letter seems to be a complaint and an appeal for assistance against the behaviors (apparently wage theft) of al-Muʿallim Nissim and al-Muʿallim Bekhor (or potentially Baḥur, if بخور is an error for بحور). The sender repeatedly emphasizes his poverty, although the large sums of money he refers to (1000s and 10000s of a silver denomination, likely medins) suggest that this may be rhetorical or relative poverty.
