India Book VII, 50. Letter (memo) from an unnamed India trader, probably in Aden, to Mufaḍḍal Ibn Abī Saʿd, in Qūṣ. Dating: first third of the thirteenth century, based on the references to the Jewish chief judge of Cairo Menaḥem b. Yiṣḥaq b. Sasson. The document lists a great number of shipments and gifts. Same hand as T-S NS J182 (India Book VII, 51). See Goitein's notes for further information.

  2. These items have been sent by your servant to my lord—
  3. may God make permanent his honored position.
  4. With the sheikh Yahya b. Abi Ί-Qasim
  5. al-Sakhāwī in the "mount" of Ibn al-Naffakh ("Hornist," "Blower of the Horn"):
  6. 3 bales with lac, each weighing
  7. 400 pounds
  8. 2 bales, "mixed,"
  9. one half pepper and the other ginger, each weighing 1 bahar
  10. 1 bale cleaned clove, weighing
  11. 40 gross mann
  12. 1 bale clove stalks, weighing 50 mann

  15. For the elder Abu Nasr, the twin brother of my lord,

  6. In the "nailformed" (boat) of Ibn Hiba what had been
  7. sent via ʿAydhāb, when the ship sank
  8. and the cargo was partially saved:
  9. 2 remainders from the pepper and ginger, weighing
  10. 814 pounds
  11. a remainder of lac, weighing 450 pounds
  12. a bale of lac, weighing 130 pounds.
  13. Marked: Abū Saʿd b. Munajjā.
  14. For my lord, out of the total load
  15. carried by Afḍal and Abū l-Surūr:

  5. with you in Qūṣ weighing 1 mann.
  6. Māyurqī is written on it.
  7. A bag for the elder Makārim ("Nobility") b.
  8. Afḍal b. Nīnū from the elder
  9. Ibn Walīd, weighing 2 and 5 mann.
  10. Written on it (in another hand) Ṣayrafī.
  11. A bag containing a precious turban made of lālas (fine red silk),
  12. a bukhnuq (shawl), and a white burda (robe) without
  13. a border for our lord Menaḥem.
  14. Marked (in Arabic characters): Mufaḍḍal Ibn Abī Saʿd.
  15. A bag with (Chinese) rhubarb, canvassed.
  16. Abu l-Ḥasan b. ʿAṭiyya ("Handsome, son of Gift") sent this
  17. to Ṭāhir b. Ibrāhīm ("Pure, son of Abraham").
  18. I instructed him to deliver everything to my lord.
  19. With Maḥāsin ("Favors"), son of the man with the parted beard:
  20. a flask with musk, weighing
  21. 2½ mithqāls.

  2. 1 mann; in the middle of this is a piece of cloth containing
  3. a unit of ambergris.

  5. a lālas ʿaraḍī (broad shawl), and a fine cotton robe,
  6. all marked: Abu l-Qāsim, the son of the Physician.
  7. If Abu l-Qāsim is in town, he should
  8. accept delivery. Otherwise,
  9. my lord should receive it.
  10. With him also: a bale with lālas textiles packed in leather,
