IB VII, 69. Draft of a deposition about a shipment of Indian Ocean merchandise carried by two merchants named Faraḥ and Abū Naṣr who were killed in ʿAydhāb. The two men were partners of Yosef Labdī, and their death occasioned legal disputes between Labdī and Abū Naṣr's sister (Wuḥsha) as well as among their creditors. This document complements the picture by describing their assets in detail. Location: Fustat. Dating: ca. 1104 CE (Goitein). Hastily written by Rabbi Avraham b. Shemaʿya. The goods were mainly minerals and pharmaceuticals: an herb called fasfasya or fasfāsa; a variety of cardamom called qāqulla; Chinese jasper (dahnāj), a semi-precious stone; tutty (tūtiyā), an oxide of zinc made from the siliceous substance in bamboo stems (tabāshīr); fossils of crawfish from China (saraṭān, used as a collyrium); and aprons made out of asbestos (ʿaraḍ).
