الوصف

Recto: Deed of sale. In Arabic script. Dating: ca. 530 AH (= 1135/36 CE). (However, Goitein read the year 55[.] AH somewhere, which would be 1155–64 CE.) Makārim b. Abū l-Faraj b. Yūsuf purchases 1/3 of a house. There is a lengthy physical description of the seller (whose name is lost): ‘a smooth forehead in which are wrinkles […] widely spaced incisors. On his right cheek there are two moles’. Also mentions the elder Sadīd al-Dawla Abū Saʿd, Abū l-Ḥasan the Samaritan, and Abū l-Ḥasan the financier (quṣṭāl). On verso, there is an undeciphered document in Arabic script, probably relating to the sale detailed on recto (PGPID 36493). (Information from Goitein’s index card and Khan.)

  2.  [هذ]ا ما اشترى مكارم بن أبي الفرج بن يوسف الـ[ ]

  3. [ السمـ]ـرة واضح الجبهة وبها غضون مقرون خفي وبقرن جبهتيـ[ـه ] 

  4. [ ] مفلج الثنايا العليا وبخده الأيمن شامتان وبحاجبه الايـ[ ]

  5. [وهـ]ـو رجل شيخ معتدل القامة اسمر اللون واضح الجبهة وبها غـ[ـضون ] 

  6. [عينه اليمـ]ـني شامة وبموخر عينه اليسرى شامة مقلوع بعض الاسنان مسـ[ـتدير اللحية ]

  7. [ ]مبلغها الثلث ثمانية اسهم من اربعة وعشرين سهما شائعا غير مقسـ[ـوم ]

  8. [ ] الذي ذكر البايع ان هذه الحصة من جميعها له وفي ملكه ويده ولـ.[ ] 

  9. [ ثـ]ـلثين وخمس مائة بشهادة غير واحد وهي الدار [ ]

  18. [ ]ويشتمل عليها وعلى سایر حقوقها كلها .[ ]

  1. In the name of God, the merciful and compassionate.  

  2. This is what Makārim ibn Abī al-Faraj ibn Yūsuf the [ … ] bought  [ … ]  

  3. [ … brownness], with a smooth forehead, in which are wrinkles, with eyebrows  linked with an arch of sparse hair, at the side of the forehead [ … ]  

  4. with widely spaced upper incisors. On his right cheek are two moles, on his  [ … ] eyebrow [ … ]  

  5. [ … he] is an elderly man, of average height, of brown complexion, with a smooth forehead, in which are wrinkles [ … ]  

  6. [his right eye] a mole and on the exterior angle of his left eye there is a mole.  Some of his teeth are missing. He has a round [beard … ]  

  7. [ … ] the amount being a third, eight shares out of twenty-four shares,  held in common, not divided [ … ]  

  8. [ …. ] of the total of which the seller stated that this portion belonged to  him, was (part of) his property and in his possession, ... [ … ]  

  9. [ … ] five-hundred and thirty [?] with the testimony of several people, it being the house [ … ]  

  10. [ … ] .... and was known by (the name of) the elder, Sadīd al-Dawla Abū Saʿd, the supervisor of [ … ]  

  11. [ … ] its three square [doors] communicating with its northern boundary [ … ]  

  12. [ … ] ... with vestibules without doors, the spring water well, the bench ...  [ … ]  

  13. one passes from the third door to its arched stone staircase [ … ]

  14.  [ … ] two facing [ …], in one of them are shelves, this being a shelter …

  15.   [ … ] … and the other has a living room, on the right and left of which  are two storerooms, one of them [ … ]

  16. [ … ] from these two floors by a pair of doors and gives access to the ground floor [ ]  

  17.  [ … ] the spring water [well], and containing a fixed water conduit, facilities  and rights [ … ]  

  18. [ … ] includes it and all its remaining rights [ … ]  

  19. [ … known] as the house of the acacia, and (subsequently) was know (by the name) of Abū al-Ḥasan, the Samaritan, the [ … ]  

  20. [ … ]the house of Abū al-Ḥasan, the financier, part of the property of these two acknowledgers .. [ … ]  

  21. [ … ] this corridor to his house. The [ … ] boundary [ … ]
