الوصف

Bifolio in the hand of ʿArūs b. Yosef. Verso is a neatly organized calendar beginning with Purim of the 15th year of maḥzor 257, i.e., 4879 AM, i.e., 1119 CE. The calendar continues with month by month entries for the rest of 4879, for all of 4880, and 4881 through Nisan. Each entry lists the corresponding Muslim month. The left page of recto is a travel record: "We arrived [...] Friday to Aden [...]. We departed Aden on Tuesday 7 Ḥeshvan, may God have mercy on us and ordain [...] for us and all of Israel. We arrived in Dahlak on Thursday on the 16th of the same month. We departed Dahlak on Tuesday the 21st [...]. We arrived in Sawākin on [...] the [...] of Kislev [...]. We departed — God willing — from Sawākin on [...]." The calendar spanning 4879–81 AM and the days of the week specified in the travel record suggest that this was likely written in Kislev 4880 AM = November/December 1119 CE. The fact that he writes "inshallah" in the phrase "we departed from Sawākin" suggests that he is writing this record while still in Sawākin and expects an imminent departure. Underneath at 90 degrees there are commercial accounts in his hand. Mentions Yiṣḥaq and Ṣedaqa; the locations of Dahlak and Sawākin twice each (both in the top section and the bottom section); the rent of a small boat (kirā jalaba, l. 6); and robes (thiyāb, four lines from the bottom).
