الوصف

Ottoman-era legal document, in Arabic script. The Jew Musā Naṣīr (or Nuṣayr) pays the ḥikr (ground tax) for his house in the Jewish neighborhood (ḥārat al-Yahūd). The tax was collected by the agent of the Agha/eunuch who was responsible for the administration of the Ottoman imperial harem and the supervision of the administration of the awqāf (endowments) of Mecca and Medina, and also some of the Ottoman sultan's awqāf. (information from Yildiz Yilmaz, Cutting a fine figure among pots and pans: Aghas of the Sultan's Harem in the 18th century). The document is signed by Aḥmad Agha, the agent (wakīl) of the chief eunuch of the sultan's palace at the dār al-saʿāda.
