الوصف

Commercial accounts in Ladino dated July 1734 CE (15 Tammuz 5494 AM). The heading names Shabbetay Alpalas in connection with "telas ke mande/mando Alessandri[a?]..." (cloth that I send/sent to Alexandria). The second line of the heading mentions a "granada Ingleza" (גראנאדה אינגליזה) that will be "delivered in Livorno to Se[nyor] Yaʿacov Abastado" (granada Ingleza a entregar en Liorne). In this context it seems unlikely that "granada" meant "English pomegranate" or "English hand grenade[!]"– perhaps it was the name of a shipping vessel. Line 9 clearly referencess a shipping vessel in the entry "por nolo di djerma." The latter term "djerma" refers to a class of "small flat-boats that allowed the transport of cargo... to the mouth of the Nile" before goods were transferred onto bigger sea-borne vessels. Accordingly, the Italian term "nolo" refers to "lading charges" (Guillaume Calafat, "Ramadam Fatet vs. John Jucker", 424-425).
