Letter fragment from Khalaf b. [...] to Maṣliaḥ b. Moshe. In Hebrew and Judaeo-Arabic. Distinctive, rudimentary handwriting. Dating: 11th or 12th century. The whole of recto is occupied with praises and blessings for the addressee and his scholarship. Where the text resumes on verso, refers to "the place of the noble sulṭān my lord and master" followed by a damaged word and then the word בעדן (either "in Aden" or "[may he rest] in Eden"). This is cryptic and might be referring to the sender's respect for the addressee, comparing his rank to that of the ruler, though would expect "manzila" (rank) rather than "manzil" (house). Then discusses business dealings. The addressee had ordered two garments (ḥulla). The sender has sent one gray one (ḥulla fākhitī) with its waist cloth (miʾzar) and another ʿattābī one that is either worn out (bālī) or perhaps not paired with a miʾzar (bi-lā miʾzar). He says that he will try to sell the rest. Greetings to Avraham b. Moshe אלראלי(?). Note that the address is now broken into two pieces because it was written across the seam where the letter was folded and glued to itself.
